Tesla CEO Elon Musk just recently let people know the “Model S floats well enough to turn it into a boat for short periods of time,” and the rotating tires can provide thrust.

You can actually see the Model S swimming through a flooded underpass in Russia in the video below.

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise though as it seems that Musk has a thing about cars that turn into boats. In 2013, Musk purchased James Bond’s customized Lotus Eprit submarine car and said he had plans to upgrade it with a Tesla powertrain to turn the movie concept into reality.

Then, last year, Tesla Model S owners discovered an Easter egg in the car’s software which turned an image of the user’s car into a submersible Lotus.

While it isn’t recommended to actually use your Model S as a boat, it’s good to know that it can serve the function of one for short periods.

In addition, Ars Technica UK noted that the S has a ‘bioweapon defense mode’ which theoretically filters polluted air so efficiently that, “You can literally survive a military-grade bio attack by sitting in your car,” so no complaints about not getting some serious value with this bad boy.
